Here is a pretty nice example of the first transistor radio from Zenith – the famous hand wired Royal 500 “owl eye” radio from 1956. This measures 5.75” tall and is supported by a metal stand that doubles as a carry handle.
This radio has a nice ebony cabinet that is chip and crack free. The 7XT40 chassis is an early serial number of #66,523 and it has been professionally recapped and aligned and is playing to my satisfaction on 4 AA batteries.*
The cabinet has a nice shine and the metal trim is bright gold and dent free and is clean in and out. This radio is a worthy candidate for any collection or to use again as a daily player, just like it was 63 years ago.

*In order to play to my satisfaction, a radio needs to pull AM stations across the dial. The radio also needs to play with strong volume and clear tone and be a pleasure to listen to. The high standards I use to rate a radio’s performance assures that it will please you too.
