Zenith Royal 500 from 1956

In stock

Offered here is a nice example of the first transistor from Zenith, the hand wired  Royal 500.  This is the original “Owl” which quickly made an impact on the transistor radio market because of it’s attention to quality.  The fact that many have survived for over 65 years and still work is a testimony to the quality of design and components that traditionally Zenith has been famous for.

The electronics of the 7XT40 chassis are original except for a capacitor upgrade which has allowed this bird to sing again.  The serial number is 46,285.  The volume is strong and the reception is what you would expect from an early hand wired 500.  This is currently receiving all of my local stations with strong clear sound.

This particular example is in nice cosmetic condition.  The maroon cabinet still shines and has survived with no chips, cracks or scratches.  The metal is bright gold and dent free.  The brass stand is straight and true and snaps into position, providing a carrying handle or a solid stand. One nice feature of this radio is the flat battery door which fits perfectly.  This is a nice one for your top shelf.
